This trial, sponsored by the Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease Trial Network in Denmark, evaluates the efficacy of a 14-day dual systemic anti-pseudomonal treatment for outpatients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), non-cystic fibrosis bronchiectasis, or asthma who are infected with Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Piperacillin is a ureidopenicillin that inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins, while tazobactam is a beta-lactamase inhibitor that prevents the enzymatic degradation of piperacillin. Ciprofloxacin is a fluoroquinolone that targets bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, thereby inhibiting DNA replication and transcription.
