This is a combination of three antibiotics—piperacillin, tazobactam, and meropenem—used together for the treatment of severe or multidrug-resistant bacterial infections. Piperacillin is an extended-spectrum penicillin antibiotic that inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis. Tazobactam is a beta-lactamase inhibitor that protects piperacillin from enzymatic degradation by beta-lactamase-producing bacteria. Meropenem is a carbapenem antibiotic with broad-spectrum activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, including many resistant strains; it also inhibits cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins. The combination has been studied for synergistic effects against certain highly resistant organisms such as KPC- and OXA-48-producing Enterobacterales, where in vitro studies have demonstrated enhanced bactericidal activity compared to monotherapy[1][2][3]. This regimen may be considered in critically ill patients with limited therapeutic options due to resistance.
