Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Piperacillin 8% + tazobactam 1.0% is an investigational topical otic (ear drop) solution developed by Yuhan Corporation for the treatment of otitis media and otorrhea. It is a fixed-dose combination of piperacillin, a broad-spectrum penicillin-type beta-lactam antibiotic, and tazobactam, a beta-lactamase inhibitor. Piperacillin acts by binding to and inhibiting penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), thereby disrupting bacterial cell wall synthesis, while tazobactam prevents the enzymatic degradation of piperacillin by bacterial beta-lactamases, restoring and extending its antibacterial activity. This formulation (also known under the study identifier YH1177-D) was evaluated in a randomized, double-blind, multicenter Phase 1/2 clinical trial (NCT02817347) to assess its safety, tolerability, and efficacy in patients with otitis media and otorrhea who had tympanostomy tubes or tympanic membrane perforations.
