Overview

This small molecule drug candidate, developed by the Global Alliance for TB Drug Development (TB Alliance), targets the essential serine/threonine-protein kinase PknB in *Mycobacterium tuberculosis*. PknB is a transmembrane kinase that plays a critical role in regulating cell wall peptidoglycan biosynthesis and bacterial cell division. Because PknB is essential for the survival and growth of the bacteria, its inhibition leads to the disruption of cell wall integrity and eventual cell death. The program is currently in the preclinical stage, specifically focused on lead identification, as part of an effort to discover novel antitubercular agents that can effectively treat tuberculosis (TB), including drug-resistant strains.
