Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Placebo (NaCl 0.9%) eye drops is an inert saline ophthalmic solution containing 0.9% sodium chloride (normal saline) as its sole ingredient, with no pharmacologically active component. It serves as the comparator arm in the Low-dose AtropIne for Myopia Control in Children (AIM) trial, a national, multicentre, prospective, randomised, placebo-controlled, double-blind study sponsored by the University Eye Hospital, Freiburg, Germany. In the AIM trial, children aged 8–12 years with progressive myopia are randomised to receive either 0.02% atropine eye drops or this placebo, with the primary objective of assessing the efficacy of low-dose atropine for myopia control in children of Caucasian/European origin. The placebo has no known biological target and is classified as a non-pharmacological vehicle/control intervention.
