Overview
This combination refers to the placebo control arm of a Phase 2 clinical trial (NCT00536770) conducted by Novacea for the treatment of advanced pancreatic adenocarcinoma. The regimen consists of the standard-of-care chemotherapy agent gemcitabine and the EGFR tyrosine kinase inhibitor erlotinib, administered alongside a placebo instead of the investigational agent DN-101 (Asentar). Gemcitabine is a nucleoside analog that interferes with DNA synthesis, while erlotinib targets the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) to inhibit tumor cell proliferation. The trial was part of Novacea's efforts to develop DN-101 (calcitriol) in oncology, but development was ultimately discontinued following safety concerns in other trials.
