Overview
This is a combination regimen used as a control arm in clinical trials, consisting of a placebo (an inert substance with no therapeutic effect) administered alongside a standard platinum-based doublet chemotherapy. Platinum-based doublet chemotherapy refers to the use of two chemotherapeutic agents, one of which is a platinum compound (such as cisplatin, carboplatin, or oxaliplatin), combined with another cytotoxic drug (commonly paclitaxel, gemcitabine, pemetrexed, vinorelbine, or docetaxel). The mechanism of action for the platinum agent involves crosslinking DNA and inhibiting DNA repair and synthesis in cancer cells. The non-platinum partner's mechanism varies by agent but generally also targets cell division or DNA synthesis. This regimen is widely used as first-line therapy for various solid tumors including lung cancer and ovarian cancer[1][3][4][6]. The inclusion of placebo allows assessment of investigational drugs' efficacy when added to standard-of-care.
