Vinorelbine is a semi-synthetic vinca alkaloid chemotherapy drug used primarily to treat non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) and advanced or metastatic breast cancer. It works as a mitotic inhibitor by binding to tubulin in microtubules, thereby inhibiting their polymerization and blocking cell division at metaphase. This action disrupts the mitotic spindle formation necessary for chromosome segregation during cell division, leading to apoptosis of rapidly dividing cancer cells.
