Drug intelligence / Profile preview
The placebo gel (AbbVie) is a non-pharmacologically active formulation developed for use as a comparator in clinical trials evaluating Levodopa-Carbidopa Intestinal Gel (LCIG), also known as Duopa or Duodopa. In the context of advanced Parkinson's disease, this gel is used in double-blind, double-dummy studies to maintain blinding for patients receiving continuous intestinal infusion. It is administered via a percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy with a jejunal tube (PEG-J) using a CADD-Legacy 1400 ambulatory infusion pump. The gel is formulated to match the viscosity and appearance of the active LCIG product but contains no levodopa or carbidopa. Its primary use was in the pivotal Phase 3 trial (NCT00660387) which demonstrated the efficacy of continuous LCIG infusion over optimized oral therapy.
