Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Plant stanol ester + camelina oil is a nutraceutical combination investigated for the management of hypercholesterolemia. The formulation typically consists of plant stanol esters (primarily sitostanol and campestanol) and camelina oil, which is a rich source of alpha-linolenic acid. Its primary mechanism of action is the displacement of cholesterol from intestinal micelles within the gastrointestinal tract, which leads to a reduction in the absorption of both dietary and biliary cholesterol. Clinical trials, including those conducted at the University of Turku, have demonstrated that this combination, often delivered in a yoghurt-based functional food format, can effectively reduce LDL cholesterol levels in moderately hypercholesterolemic individuals.
