Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Plasmalogen + elastin is a combination nutraceutical product developed by Sansho Pharmaceutical, primarily targeting cognitive impairment and prodromal dementia. Plasmalogens are a unique class of membrane glycerophospholipids characterized by an ether bond at the sn-1 position, which are highly enriched in the brain and play critical roles in signal transduction and protecting cells from oxidative stress. Levels of plasmalogens are notably reduced in the brains of patients with Alzheimer's disease. Elastin, a key structural protein providing elasticity to tissues, is included in the formulation to potentially support vascular health and provide synergistic effects on cognitive function. The combination is marketed in Japan as a Food with Function Claim (FFC) and has been evaluated in clinical trials for its ability to improve memory and cognitive performance in healthy older adults and those with mild cognitive decline.
