Platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) is an autologous biologic material derived from a patient's own blood, consisting of a fibrin matrix enriched with platelets, leukocytes, and various growth factors. In research conducted at the University Hospital, Strasbourg, PRF is being investigated as a biological coating to functionalize prosthetic patches, such as expanded polytetrafluoroethylene (e-PTFE), used in the surgical repair of congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH). The PRF coating, often applied in conjunction with polydopamine (PDA), is intended to improve the biocompatibility of synthetic materials, promoting cellular colonization and tissue integration to reduce the risk of prosthesis release and recurrence in neonatal patients. The research specifically evaluates the efficacy of PRF derived from neonates with CDH compared to healthy adults in promoting cell colonization on hydrophobic prosthetic surfaces.
