Platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) is an autologous, second-generation platelet concentrate prepared from a patient's own blood through centrifugation without the addition of anticoagulants or bovine thrombin. This process results in a dense fibrin matrix that serves as a biological scaffold, trapping platelets, leukocytes, and a high concentration of growth factors such as vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), transforming growth factor-beta 1 (TGF-β1), and platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF). These factors are released slowly over time, promoting angiogenesis, cell proliferation, and tissue regeneration. In the specific context of research at the University of Baghdad, PRF membranes are being evaluated in Phase 3 clinical trials for their ability to increase gingival thickness and keratinized tissue width in patients with a thin gingival biotype undergoing dental implant surgery, aiming to improve both esthetic outcomes and the long-term stability of the implants.
