Overview

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is an autologous biologic therapy consisting of a concentrated suspension of platelets derived from the patient's own blood. This preparation contains a high concentration of alpha-granules which, upon activation, release various growth factors including platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF), transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-β), and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF). These factors promote angiogenesis, mesenchymal stem cell recruitment, and extracellular matrix synthesis. In the clinical study led by Dr. Hamdy Singab, PRP is applied topically to the sternal edges during median sternotomy closure in open-heart surgery patients to accelerate bone healing and reduce the incidence of sternal dehiscence, particularly in high-risk populations such as those with diabetes or high BMI.
