Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is an autologous biologic preparation derived from a patient's own peripheral blood, concentrated to contain a high density of platelets. This specific research intervention, evaluated in a clinical trial led by Ferhat Say, is used to treat knee osteoarthritis by delivering a concentrated pool of growth factors and bioactive molecules directly into the intra-articular space. Upon activation, platelets release various factors—including Platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF), Transforming growth factor beta (TGF-β), and Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF)—which promote chondrocyte proliferation, stimulate mesenchymal stem cell recruitment, and exert anti-inflammatory effects. The trial conducted by Say and colleagues was a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study that compared the efficacy of single versus multiple PRP injections against a saline placebo in patients with mild to moderate knee osteoarthritis over a 24-month follow-up period.
