Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is an autologous biologic therapy being investigated by Alexandria University for the treatment of mild to moderate idiopathic carpal tunnel syndrome. Derived from the patient's own blood, PRP contains a high concentration of platelets which, upon activation, release various growth factors and cytokines, including platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF), vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), and transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-β). These factors are hypothesized to promote peripheral nerve regeneration, improve microcirculation, and exert anti-inflammatory effects on the compressed median nerve. In the clinical trial NCT05053477, PRP was administered via ultrasound-guided perineural injection to patients who had not responded to conservative treatments, comparing its efficacy against pulsed radiofrequency and corticosteroid injections.
