Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is an autologous biological therapy consisting of a concentrated fraction of platelets derived from the patient's own peripheral blood. Developed by Assiut University for the treatment of idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss (ISSNHL), PRP is administered via intratympanic injection. The therapeutic rationale relies on the release of high concentrations of growth factors and cytokines—such as platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF), transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-β), and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF)—from platelet alpha-granules upon activation. These factors promote tissue regeneration, angiogenesis, and neuroprotection within the inner ear, potentially facilitating the repair of damaged cochlear hair cells and spiral ganglion neurons. This regenerative approach aims to provide a novel treatment option for patients who do not respond to standard corticosteroid therapy.
