Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is an autologous biologic therapy being investigated as an adjuvant treatment for atrophic scars following surgical scar revision. In a clinical trial led by Heba Mohamed Saad Eldien at Assiut University (NCT03264573), PRP is prepared from the patient's own blood to contain a high concentration of platelets. Upon injection into the scar site, these platelets degranulate and release various growth factors, such as platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF), transforming growth factor beta (TGF-β), and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF). These factors promote wound healing by stimulating fibroblast activity, collagen synthesis, and angiogenesis, thereby improving the texture and appearance of atrophic scars. The study evaluates PRP both as a monotherapy and in combination with adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells to enhance tissue remodeling.
