Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is an autologous biologic therapy being investigated by Karla Andrea Arias Varela for the treatment of knee osteoarthritis. It is prepared by concentrating platelets from the patient's own peripheral blood, resulting in a substance rich in growth factors (such as TGF-β, PDGF, and VEGF) and cytokines. When injected intra-articularly, PRP is thought to modulate the inflammatory environment within the joint, promote tissue repair, and alleviate pain. In the Phase 3 clinical trial (NCT03477630), it is administered as four 8 ml doses every 15 days and compared against hyaluronic acid (Synvisc-One) to evaluate improvements in joint function and pain reduction using standardized scales like WOMAC and EVA.
