Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is an autologous blood-derived biologic therapy being evaluated by the Biobizkaia Health Research Institute for the treatment of chronic omalgia (shoulder pain) associated with rotator cuff tendinopathy. The preparation involves concentrating platelets from the patient's own blood to create a formulation rich in growth factors and cytokines, such as platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF) and transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-β). When injected intralesionally, these bioactive proteins modulate the local joint and tendon environment, stimulating tissue repair, collagen synthesis, and angiogenesis. This specific protocol involves in-house production under Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) to ensure a standardized formulation, aiming to provide more sustained pain relief and functional improvement compared to traditional corticosteroid and anesthetic injections.
