Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is an autologous concentration of platelets in a small volume of plasma, prepared from the patient's own blood. Exactech developed the **Accelerate PRP System**, a medical device used to produce PRP for orthopedic applications. The therapeutic effect of PRP is mediated by the release of various growth factors and cytokines (such as PDGF, TGF-β, and VEGF) from the alpha-granules of concentrated platelets upon activation. These factors promote tissue healing, stimulate angiogenesis, and modulate inflammatory pathways. In the context of osteoarthritis and total knee arthroplasty (TKA), Exactech has investigated the use of PRP to improve short-term patient outcomes, specifically focusing on reducing post-operative pain and minimizing the drop in hemoglobin levels associated with surgical blood loss.
