Overview

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is an autologous biologic therapy prepared by concentrating platelets from a patient's own peripheral blood. Developed and investigated by the Hospital Italiano de Buenos Aires for the treatment of rotator cuff tendinopathy, this specific PRP formulation contains a supraphysiological concentration of platelets (typically 4-8 times baseline levels). Upon degranulation, these platelets release a variety of growth factors, including platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF), transforming growth factor beta (TGF-β), and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF). These factors promote tissue healing, angiogenesis, and collagen synthesis while modulating the inflammatory environment within the subacromial space. In clinical trials conducted at the Instituto de Ortopedia y Traumatología 'Carlos E. Ottolenghi', subacromial PRP injections demonstrated superior long-term functional outcomes and pain reduction compared to traditional corticosteroid injections at one-year follow-up.
