Overview

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is an autologous biologic therapy developed by the Hospital Universitari Vall d'Hebron Research Institute for the treatment of knee osteoarthritis. It is prepared from the patient's own venous blood through a double centrifugation process in a clean room environment to isolate and concentrate platelets in plasma. This preparation contains a high concentration of growth factors and bioactive molecules that are released upon activation to promote tissue repair, modulate inflammation, and potentially stimulate cartilage regeneration in degenerative joint conditions. The therapy was evaluated in a Phase 3 clinical trial (NCT01381081) comparing a single intra-articular injection of PRP against corticosteroids for pain reduction and functional improvement in patients with advanced knee osteoarthritis.
