Overview

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is an autologous biologic therapy consisting of a concentrated fraction of the patient's own platelets. In the context of erectile dysfunction (ED), specifically vasculogenic ED, it is administered via intracavernosal injection. The therapy leverages the high concentration of growth factors (such as VEGF, PDGF, and TGF-β) and cytokines released from platelet alpha-granules upon activation. These factors are hypothesized to stimulate neoangiogenesis, improve endothelial function, and promote the regeneration of cavernous tissue, thereby enhancing penile hemodynamics. This specific application was investigated by the Institute for the Study of Urological Diseases in Greece in a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial (NCT04050020), which demonstrated significant efficacy in improving erectile function scores compared to placebo.
