Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is an autologous biologic therapy consisting of a concentrated suspension of platelets derived from a patient's own peripheral blood. Developed for use in temporomandibular disorders (TMD) by researchers at the Medical University of Silesia, PRP is administered via intramuscular injection into the masseter and temporalis muscles. The therapeutic effect is mediated by the degranulation of alpha-granules within the platelets, which releases a variety of growth factors, including platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF), transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-β), and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF). These factors promote tissue healing, angiogenesis, and the modulation of inflammatory processes, thereby reducing myofascial pain and improving jaw function in patients with TMD.
