Overview

Autologous platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is a concentrated volume of plasma derived from a patient's own peripheral blood, containing a high density of platelets and associated growth factors. In a Phase 2 randomized controlled trial conducted by Nanjing University (NCT04150107), PRP is being evaluated as an intraovarian injection for women under 40 with poor ovarian response (POR) according to the Bologna criteria. The therapeutic rationale is based on the ability of platelets to release a cocktail of bioactive proteins, including platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF), vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), and transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-β), which may stimulate neoangiogenesis, reduce follicular apoptosis, and potentially activate dormant primordial follicles. The study specifically investigates whether this intervention can improve the number of retrieved oocytes and the quality of embryos in patients who have previously failed to respond adequately to conventional controlled ovarian stimulation.
