Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is an autologous biological therapy being investigated by South Valley University for the treatment of knee osteoarthritis. The therapy involves concentrating platelets from the patient's own blood, which, upon intra-articular injection, release a variety of growth factors and bioactive molecules from alpha granules. These factors are thought to modulate the joint environment by reducing the levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines, such as tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) and macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF), potentially alleviating pain and improving joint function. In clinical studies conducted by South Valley University (NCT04754685), the treatment is administered as a series of three injections spaced two weeks apart to patients with varying degrees of knee osteoarthritis severity.
