Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is an autologous biologic therapy being investigated by Vancouver General Hospital for the treatment of androgenetic alopecia. It is prepared from the patient's own blood through centrifugation to concentrate platelets in plasma, which contains high concentrations of growth factors such as platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF), transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-β), and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF). These growth factors are thought to stimulate hair follicle stem cells in the bulge area, promoting hair follicle development and neovascularization. In clinical trials (e.g., NCT02074943), PRP is administered via intradermal or subdermal injections into the scalp, typically in multiple treatment sessions, to promote hair regrowth in patients with androgenetic alopecia.
