Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Pneumococcal 13-valent conjugate vaccine is a sterile suspension of saccharides of the capsular antigens of Streptococcus pneumoniae serotypes 1, 3, 4, 5, 6A, 6B, 7F, 9V, 14, 18C, 19A, 19F, and 23F, individually conjugated to a non-toxic diphtheria carrier protein (CRM197). It is indicated for the prevention of invasive disease, pneumonia, and otitis media caused by these specific serotypes. By conjugating the polysaccharides to a protein carrier, the vaccine induces a T-cell dependent immune response, which is more effective in infants and provides better immunological memory than plain polysaccharide vaccines. The vaccine is typically adsorbed on an aluminum phosphate adjuvant to enhance immunogenicity.
