pneumococcal 7-valent conjugate vaccine (Wyeth)

**Prevenar** is a 7-valent pneumococcal polysaccharide conjugate vaccine originally developed by Wyeth and subsequently developed and manufactured by Pfizer. It contains capsular polysaccharides from *Streptococcus pneumoniae* serotypes 4, 6B, 9V, 14, 18C, 19F, and 23F, each individually conjugated to the nontoxic diphtheria-toxin carrier protein CRM197. The conjugation converts the normally T-cell-independent polysaccharide response into a T-cell-dependent immune response, inducing serotype-specific antibodies and immunologic memory that reduce vaccine-serotype pneumococcal carriage and help prevent pneumococcal disease, including invasive pneumococcal disease. The China CDC-sponsored randomized study specifically evaluated its effectiveness in reducing nasopharyngeal carriage of the seven vaccine serotypes in healthy Chinese children aged 2 to 5 years.
