Drug intelligence / Profile preview
This is a combination of two pneumococcal conjugate vaccines. Prevenar (7-valent) was the earlier version containing 7 serotypes of Streptococcus pneumoniae, while Prevenar 13 is the newer version containing 13 serotypes (including the original 7 plus 6 additional serotypes). The vaccines help prevent pneumococcal disease including pneumonia, meningitis, bacteremia, sepsis and acute otitis media. Children who began immunization with Prevenar (7-valent) may complete their vaccination schedule by switching to Prevenar 13 at any point in the schedule. For children 12-59 months who are completely immunized with Prevenar (7-valent), a single dose of Prevenar 13 is recommended to elicit immune responses to the 6 additional serotypes, administered at least 8 weeks after the final dose of Prevenar (7-valent).
