Drug intelligence / Profile preview
This refers to a sequential pneumococcal vaccination regimen consisting of the 15-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV15) followed by the 23-valent pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine (PPSV23). PCV15, marketed as Vaxneuvance, contains 15 pneumococcal polysaccharide serotypes (1, 3, 4, 5, 6A, 6B, 7F, 9V, 14, 18C, 19A, 19F, 22F, 23F, and 33F) conjugated to the CRM197 carrier protein to induce a T-cell dependent immune response and immunological memory. PPSV23, marketed as Pneumovax 23, contains 23 purified capsular polysaccharides (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6B, 7F, 8, 9N, 9V, 10A, 11A, 12F, 14, 15B, 17F, 18C, 19A, 19F, 20, 22F, 23F, and 33F) to provide broader serotype coverage. This sequential strategy is recommended by the CDC's Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) for adults aged 65 years and older, as well as younger adults with certain underlying medical conditions, to optimize protection against invasive pneumococcal disease and pneumonia caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae.
