It is a 10-valent conjugate vaccine, meaning it targets ten different serotypes of *Streptococcus pneumoniae* bacteria. The vaccine utilizes a CRM197 carrier protein, a non-toxic variant of diphtheria toxin, to enhance the immune response to the polysaccharide antigens. This technology, including the CRM197 production strain and conjugation chemistry, was licensed from Pfenex (now Ligand Pharmaceuticals) and Fina Biosolutions, respectively, by the Serum Institute of India for the development and production of affordable vaccines, particularly for low- and middle-income countries.
