Overview

Synflorix is a 10-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PHiD-CV) developed by GSK for the prevention of invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD), pneumonia, and acute otitis media (AOM) caused by *Streptococcus pneumoniae* in infants and children. The vaccine contains capsular polysaccharides from 10 pneumococcal serotypes (1, 4, 5, 6B, 7F, 9V, 14, 18C, 19F, and 23F). A unique feature of this vaccine is the use of a protein derived from non-typeable *Haemophilus influenzae* (NTHi), known as Protein D, as the carrier protein for eight of the ten serotypes, which may provide additional protection against NTHi-related otitis media. The remaining two serotypes are conjugated to tetanus toxoid and diphtheria toxoid. It is formulated with an aluminum phosphate adjuvant.
