Overview
PoliovakSin is a trivalent inactivated poliomyelitis vaccine (sIPV) developed and manufactured by the Russian pharmaceutical company Nanolek. Unlike traditional inactivated polio vaccines (IPV) that utilize wild-type poliovirus strains (Salk vaccine), PoliovakSin is produced using attenuated Sabin strains (Type 1, 2, and 3). This approach significantly enhances biosafety during the manufacturing process by reducing the risk of environmental reintroduction of wild poliovirus, aligning with the World Health Organization's Global Polio Eradication Initiative. The vaccine is administered via intramuscular injection and is designed to elicit neutralizing antibodies against all three poliovirus serotypes, providing protection against paralytic poliomyelitis. It was developed to support the transition from oral polio vaccines (OPV) to IPV in national immunization schedules.
