Overview

Poliovirus type 2 antigen (formaldehyde inactivated) is a suspension of purified and formaldehyde-inactivated poliovirus Type 2, typically derived from the MEF‑1 strain. It is used as part of the inactivated polio vaccine (IPV) for active immunization against paralytic disease caused by infection with wild-type or vaccine-derived Type 2 polioviruses. The mechanism of action involves stimulating the immune system to produce neutralizing antibodies against the virus, thereby conferring protective immunity. This component is included both as a monovalent and as part of trivalent or combination vaccines for infants, children, and adults[1][4][7]. The primary indication is prevention of polio; it does not treat active infections.
