Overview

Polydioxanone (PDO) is a synthetic, biodegradable, monofilament polymer used extensively in medical applications, particularly as an absorbable surgical suture and in aesthetic medicine as a facial implant thread. Developed and marketed by companies such as IMEIK Technology Development, PDO threads are utilized for facial tissue lifting and aesthetic repair. The polymer is broken down in the body via hydrolysis into glyoxylate and ethoxyacetic acid, which are subsequently excreted. In aesthetic procedures, the insertion of PDO threads into the subdermal tissue provides an immediate mechanical lift to sagging skin and triggers a long-term foreign body response that stimulates the production of new collagen (neocollagenesis). This process enhances skin elasticity and structural integrity even after the thread has been fully absorbed.
