PEG-ELP + bisacodyl is a combination bowel preparation regimen used to cleanse the colon prior to colonoscopy. It consists of 2 liters of polyethylene glycol electrolytes powder (PEG-ELP), an osmotic laxative, supplemented with bisacodyl, a stimulant laxative. This tailored regimen was specifically investigated by researchers at Shandong University for patients with constipation-type stool patterns, identified as Bristol Stool Form Scale (BSFS) types 1 or 2. Polyethylene glycol works by drawing water into the intestinal lumen to flush the colon, while bisacodyl acts directly on the colonic mucosa to stimulate peristalsis and secretion. The combination aims to improve the quality of bowel cleansing in high-risk patients who often have inadequate preparation with standard PEG-ELP alone, thereby enhancing the diagnostic yield of colonoscopy.
