Polyethylene glycol + magnesium sulfate is a combination osmotic laxative regimen developed and evaluated by Changhai Hospital for bowel preparation prior to colonoscopy. This specific protocol utilizes a low volume (1 liter) of polyethylene glycol (PEG) combined with 50 grams of magnesium sulfate, followed by additional water intake. The regimen is designed to achieve high-quality colonic cleansing while significantly reducing the volume of PEG solution required compared to standard 3-liter or 4-liter regimens, thereby improving patient compliance and tolerability. Polyethylene glycol acts as a non-absorbable osmotic agent that retains water in the intestinal lumen, while magnesium sulfate further increases osmotic pressure and stimulates intestinal motility and fluid secretion through the release of cholecystokinin.
