This combination bowel preparation regimen was developed and evaluated by the Mayo Clinic to optimize visualization during small bowel capsule endoscopy, particularly in patients presenting with gastrointestinal hemorrhage. The regimen consists of three primary components: polyethylene glycol (PEG), an osmotic laxative that induces watery diarrhea to clear fecal debris; simethicone, an anti-foaming agent that reduces the surface tension of gas bubbles to prevent visual obscuration; and metoclopramide, a prokinetic agent that enhances gastric emptying and intestinal transit. By combining these agents, the regimen aims to improve the diagnostic yield of capsule endoscopy for identifying obscure sources of bleeding in the small intestine.
