Overview
Low-volume polyethylene glycol (PEG) plus ascorbic acid is an osmotic laxative bowel preparation solution used for colon cleansing prior to colonoscopy. It combines PEG-3350 with electrolytes (sodium sulfate, sodium chloride, potassium chloride) and ascorbic acid/sodium ascorbate, allowing effective bowel cleansing at a reduced volume of 2L compared to the standard 4L PEG solution. The ascorbic acid component acts as an additional osmotic laxative, enabling the volume reduction while maintaining efficacy and improving patient tolerability. It works by drawing water into the colon, increasing stool volume and stimulating bowel movements to clear the gastrointestinal tract.
