Drug intelligence / Profile preview
This drug is an osmotic laxative combination used for bowel cleansing prior to colonoscopy. It consists of two main components: a polyethylene glycol (PEG) 3350 electrolyte solution and a mixture of sulfate salts (sodium sulfate, potassium sulfate, and magnesium sulfate). The mechanism of action involves the creation of an osmotic gradient within the intestinal lumen; the non-absorbable PEG and poorly absorbed sulfate ions draw water into the colon, increasing the volume of the luminal contents and stimulating bowel movements. This combination was designed to provide effective colon cleansing with a lower volume of fluid compared to traditional 4-liter PEG-based preparations. It was developed by Braintree Laboratories and received FDA approval in 2013 under the brand name Suclear, though it was later discontinued from the market.
