Overview
This drug is a combination bowel preparation regimen used for colon cleansing prior to colonoscopy. It consists of an osmotic laxative component (polyethylene glycol 3350, sodium sulfate, sodium bicarbonate, sodium chloride, and potassium chloride) and a stimulant laxative (bisacodyl). Polyethylene glycol 3350 is a high-molecular-weight polymer that acts as an osmotic agent, retaining water in the intestinal lumen to increase stool volume and soften consistency. The included electrolytes help maintain osmotic balance and prevent significant fluid or electrolyte shifts. Bisacodyl is a diphenylmethane derivative that is hydrolyzed in the gut to its active metabolite, which directly stimulates the enteric nervous system and colonic mucosa to increase peristaltic activity. Aspartame is included as a flavoring agent. This combination is typically administered in a split-dose or single-dose regimen the day before and/or the day of the procedure.
