Overview
Polyethylene glycol 400 + propylene glycol is a combination of two demulcents used primarily in over-the-counter ophthalmic lubricant formulations for the management of dry eye disease (DED). Polyethylene glycol 400 (PEG 400) and propylene glycol (PG) function as humectants and lubricants that supplement the natural tear film, reducing ocular surface friction and preventing desiccation of the corneal and conjunctival epithelium. In advanced formulations such as Systane Ultra, these active ingredients are often paired with hydroxypropyl-guar (HP-guar), which forms a pH-dependent viscoelastic gel matrix upon contact with the ocular surface, thereby extending the residence time of the lubricants and promoting epithelial healing.
