Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Systane Ultra PF is a preservative-free lubricant eye drop developed by Alcon for the management of dry eye disease (DED) and ocular discomfort associated with contact lens wear. The formulation contains two active demulcents, polyethylene glycol 400 (0.4%) and propylene glycol (0.3%), which work synergistically to supplement the aqueous layer of the tear film and protect the corneal epithelium from dehydration. As a preservative-free (PF) product, it is specifically indicated for patients with sensitive eyes or those who require frequent daily dosing, as it eliminates the risk of ocular surface toxicity often associated with preservatives like benzalkonium chloride. Clinical studies, including Phase IV post-market follow-up trials, have demonstrated that Systane Ultra PF effectively improves clinical parameters such as tear break-up time (TBUT), goblet cell density, and Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI) scores, providing symptom relief comparable to preserved formulations while maintaining a superior safety profile for long-term use.
