Overview

Polyethylene glycol 400 + sodium hyaluronate is a combination ophthalmic formulation used primarily as an eye lubricant for the temporary relief of burning, irritation, and discomfort due to dryness of the eye or exposure to wind or sun. Polyethylene glycol 400 (PEG 400) acts as a wetting agent that spreads evenly across the ocular surface to maintain hydration and reduce friction during blinking. Sodium hyaluronate forms a viscoelastic film over the cornea and conjunctiva, providing prolonged lubrication and protection against environmental irritants. Together, these agents replenish and stabilize the tear film, improve ocular lubrication, reduce ocular surface inflammation, protect against epithelial damage (such as keratitis), alleviate contact lens discomfort, and support pre- or post-operative care in ophthalmology[1][2][3][4][5][6].
