Overview

Fufang Rongshu is an osmotic laxative combination developed by Yangtze River Pharmaceutical Group, primarily indicated for the treatment of functional constipation and for bowel cleansing prior to clinical procedures such as colonoscopy or surgery. The formulation consists of polyethylene glycol (PEG) 4000, a high-molecular-weight linear polymer, along with essential electrolytes including sodium chloride, sodium bicarbonate, and potassium chloride. PEG 4000 works by binding water molecules through hydrogen bonding, thereby increasing the osmotic pressure and water content within the intestinal lumen. This leads to an increase in fecal volume, softening of the stool, and stimulation of colonic motility. The inclusion of electrolytes is designed to maintain the body's water-electrolyte balance, minimizing the risk of dehydration or electrolyte disturbances during the purgative process.
