Overview

Polyethylene glycol electrolytes powder (II) is a balanced osmotic laxative formulation used for whole-bowel irrigation. It consists of polyethylene glycol 4000 combined with a specific balance of electrolytes, including sodium sulfate, sodium bicarbonate, sodium chloride, and potassium chloride. The formulation is designed to retain water in the intestinal lumen through osmotic pressure, thereby increasing stool volume and inducing peristalsis to effectively clear the gastrointestinal tract. The inclusion of electrolytes is intended to maintain isosmotic balance and prevent clinically significant fluid or electrolyte shifts during the cleansing process. It is primarily indicated for bowel preparation prior to diagnostic procedures such as colonoscopy, barium enema, and capsule endoscopy. In clinical research at Qilu Hospital of Shandong University, it has been evaluated for optimizing bowel preparation in magnetically controlled capsule endoscopy.
