Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Polyglucosamine + glucomannan (marketed under the brand name REFIGURA®) is a combination medical device and drug product used for weight management and the treatment of overweight-related health disorders. It consists of polyglucosamine (a chitosan derivative sourced from the fungus *Aspergillus niger*) and glucomannan (a natural polysaccharide fiber from the *Amorphophallus konjac* plant). The product is administered orally as a powder dissolved in water and acts locally within the gastrointestinal tract without systemic absorption. Its primary mechanism involves binding to dietary fats and lipids to reduce their absorption, while also promoting satiety. The efficacy and safety of the combination were demonstrated in the BEFORE clinical trial (NCT03557424), which showed significant weight reduction in overweight subjects compared to placebo without requiring changes in lifestyle or diet.
