Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Polymyxin b sulfate + dexamethasone + neomycin is an approved **ophthalmic small-molecule combination drug** containing two antibiotics, neomycin sulfate and polymyxin b sulfate, together with the corticosteroid dexamethasone. It is marketed in topical ocular formulations including ophthalmic suspension and ophthalmic ointment for steroid-responsive inflammatory eye conditions when bacterial infection is present or there is a meaningful risk of bacterial ocular infection. The antibacterial components provide broad activity against susceptible ocular pathogens including *Staphylococcus aureus*, *Escherichia coli*, *Haemophilus influenzae*, *Klebsiella/Enterobacter* species, *Neisseria* species, and *Pseudomonas aeruginosa*, while dexamethasone suppresses inflammatory signaling through glucocorticoid receptor activation. The product is used for inflammatory conditions of the conjunctiva, cornea, and anterior segment of the globe, including chronic anterior uveitis and corneal injury from chemical, radiation, or thermal burns or foreign-body penetration. It is a long-established prescription ophthalmic combination marketed by multiple manufacturers, including Harrow for suspension presentations and Sandoz for ointment presentations.
